Personal Statement
Hi, my name is Molly Smith. When I started high school at Blue Valley North, I never would have thought that I would be swimming in college. My freshman year, with no previous swim experience, I went out on a limb and decided to try out for my high school's swim team. Among all the club and competitive swimmers at the try out, I didn't think that I belonged there. However, my coach saw something in me and made the decision to put me on varsity with the seasoned swimmers because he thought I had a huge amount of untapped potential. After shocking improvements during high school season, I joined Kansas City Swim Academy (KCSA). Fast forward just one year, and I couldn't imagine my life without swim. In just one year, it went from a carefree activity to my passion. In just one year, I went from a freshman with no swim experience to one of the best swimmers on the team. In just one year, I found something that shaped my life, my goals, and my future.
Unlike many swimmers who aspire to compete in college, I haven't been swimming all my life. However, that means that I won't be burnt out or lose my interest, as many swimmers do after years of competition. My drive to improve and keep swimming is strong and won't falter, unlike some life-long club swimmers.
Most importantly, unlike those who have swam for many years, I still have an incredible amount of room to improve. In one year (from 2018 to 2019) I went from a 2:21.50 in my 200 free SCY to a 2:03.85, dropping 18 seconds. In my 100 free, I went from a 1:05.0 to a 57.06. I even dropped 2.2 seconds from a 59.8 to a 57.6 in my 100 free in 2 months (October to December 2018). I am determined to continue working hard to drop more time, regardless of how much I have already improved.
Finally, I prioritize academics. I am and have been enrolled in all honors and AP courses. I have a weighted GPA of 4.5 and participate in extracurriculars like National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and Choir. I have not taken my official SAT/ACT tests since I have not yet started my junior year, however I have plans to take them fall 2019 and spring 2020. I also have been volunteering on a regular basis as a swim instructor for children with learning disabilities, which I enjoy very much. Academics are very important to me and I will also continue to pursue my academic goals.
