My passion for swimming was evident at a very young age when my family was relocated to the beaches of Florida. Living within walking distance to the ocean meant enjoying long days on the beach and in the water. I often joke with my friends that it was during this time that I began to grow my gills and fins – a definite advantage in competitive swimming! My parents enrolled me in swimming lessons at age 5, never imagining that 11 years later they’d be watching that same green-eyed girl standing at the top of a podium and be presented as one of the fastest swimmers among her peers in the state of Kansas.
Spending days under the sun and in the water, I was surrounded by beauty. The gentle breezes, the scurrying creatures along the sand, the sounds of laughter and children playing. The pureness and beauty of it all was not something I fully appreciated nor really understood until I became a young woman, but I feel as though this is where my creative spirit was born. I often express this creativity through writing and photography, and as I further my studies at Bishop Carroll High School, I am finding more and more mediums through which I can convey my appreciation and admiration for the beauty that surrounds me.
As the older sister of two mischievous brothers, I often find myself putting out fires, both literally and figuratively! I try to lead by example by showing them the importance of good study habits, hard work, and prioritization. Being a competitive swimmer requires many hours of training each week, and so I have learned to prioritize my time in order to attend practice, get to school on time, and finish my homework at night while still fostering meaningful friendships. I believe the key to success is not only hard work and sacrifice, but also keeping things in perspective and enjoying life as a teenager. I hope I have made a positive influence on my brothers and given them the confidence they will need to follow their own path.
In summary, my journey up until this point and the successes I have achieved have been driven by hard work and my desire to win. My earnestness to pursue a college swim career is not easy to convey in a few paragraphs, but I hope my records and achievements are further proof of my dedication. I am eager to begin this next chapter in life, and although it’s impossible to say what my future holds, I pray God allows me to use the skills he has bestowed upon me.
