I have been swimming since I was six years old and for those first few years it was a love-hate relationship. The year I turned 12 was the most significant in my career because I won the Louisiana Swimmer of the Year for 12 and unders and that gave me the confidence I needed to really push myself and start thinking about my future in swimming.
In this sport I have learned that it is as much an individual sport as it is a team sport. I live in a small town and so the year-round swimming population is not large, but high school swimming attracts more people. I know what it is like to have to train alone versus with a team and I can honestly say that being on a close knit team is one of the most important things about this sport. My high school team has motivated me to be a better person and athlete, kept me accountable, and acted as my second family. That is what I am looking for in a college team.
I love this sport and it has taught me discipline, the value of a team, and how to be a leader, but I am first and foremost going to college to better improve my education. Going to a school that will prepare me for the future is just as important, if not more, as swimming in college. Education is important to me and a school that provides the perfect combination of both athletics and academics is what I believe would be the best fit for me.
