I owe my swimming career to a two story tall, 1950s era water slide that meets no modern safety requirements. When I was four, I really wanted to use that slide at my summer pool. The only thing holding me back was that you had to earn a swim test patch first. After two seasons of trying, I still could not pass the test. Because of my infinite desire, that summer I joined the swim team to learn how to swim well enough to earn the patch. I finally got the little safety pin with some fabric on it, and I was also a member of the swim team. Ten years later, I still love the sport. I grew from just barely making it across the pool that first summer to starting with my first year round team at the age of eight. Now, as an older swimmer, I look forward to a career in college swimming. I like the sense of community on a team that comes from working hard together every day and I like being a part of something other than school. As a team member, I am dedicated to my own progress, I am encouraging of my fellow swimmers, and I enjoy setting and meeting individual goals. I work as hard in school as I do in the pool, using my self discipline to maintain honor roll level grades. I have the same desire to swim in college as I had to earn that patch when I was young.
