Personal Statement

My mother was an all state swimmer and inspired to be a swimmer.  She continued on swimming after having me and has become a world record holder in master's swimming, this has inspired to become a swimmer.  However, I was unable to swim all-year long due to financial reasons, my father didn't see the importance in swimming.  Therefore, my mother started a summer swim program in the local community for my sister and I to swim. She always said that I was more naturally talented than she was but I didn't engulf that drive that she had.  Primarily for the reason that I knew I was never going to be able to reach my full capabilities by only swimming in the summer.  My mother volunteered her time and started a middle school swim team, so that I could swim during the school year, but that was only for three months out of the year.  At the championships for the two years that I did that, I swam against swimmers that swam all year long.  I am proud to say that I came in first place for the 50-yard freestyle.  Unfortunately, once I went onto high school the summer pool was closed so I only swam during the swim season for high school. The first year I swam I broke four freshmen records.  I only swam short distance events, the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle.  My mother was my high school swim coach (for two years) and tried to pursue me to swim the 200 and 500, however I enjoy sprinting more.  Needless to say, I was unable to swim this year because our high school pool was closed (as a result of a pending lawsuit).  The last year that I did swim (my junior year), I won conference in both events that I swam.  My best time in the 50-yard freestyle is a 28.13 and for the 100-yard freestyle is a 59.71.

Soccer is my other sport that I enjoy with a great deal.  Last year I was honored with making All-Conference Defense for Macomb County.  I have always played the defense position and take pride with stopping goals and assisting my team mates out.

As for academics, I have been in the National Honor Society for the past two years.  I always strive to keep my GPA above a 3.6.  I have always been on the honor roll throughout my academics including elementary school.  I won the spelling bee in the fourth and fifth grade.  Academics and athletics are both important.

Finally, my character is of the utmost importance to me.  I want people to find me dependable and trustworthy.  To be an athlete and to be a good scholar once must be dependable and have a good sense of character.

I thank you for your time in reading my personal statement, and I do hope that you give me the chance to prove myself worthy.
