Personal Statement
My name is Ava Martin, and I've been swimming for 8 years, only two of which were full, year-round seasons, with the others being summer swim seasons. Swimming is a passion of mine because everyone has their own goals to set, yet on a team we all support and cheer each other on. When I began swimming in high school my Freshman year, things really took off for me, and I became more invested in this sport than ever. I was being pushed harder than I ever had, but could also see my growth. This allowed me to create new goals to push myself, and it was after this season that I began swimming year-round. Unfortunately, due to COVID, this season was cut short and I was out of the pool for a few months, and this past winter I have not been able to train as much as I have wished. However, this made me ever more inspired when I got back in the pool, and during my second high school season, I made it to states for two relays, and came very close to making my 200 freestyle state cut. Due to these achievements, I know I will be pushing myself even harder to reach my goals for next season.
In the classroom, I am a dedicated, hardworking student. Even with the pandemic putting many Michigan schools online for nearly a year, I was able to push through and continue getting good grades. I take all honors and AP classes, and have learned to balance between swim, school, and relaxation to get the most out of my time. In college, I am looking into engineering majors, particularly chemical and aerospace engineering, due to my love of math and science. I am very passionate and driven about everything I do, and set reachable goals for myself. My goals for the upcoming season are to go to states for the 200 and 500 freestyle. I hope to be getting back into the groove of things once my club is able to reopen for the spring, and begin working even harder.
For the upcoming Fall 2022 season, I have been selected to be one of the 4 captains for my high school team.
