Personal Statement
In my first year in high school, going to the State Championships as a freshman on the relay team was the highlight for me and really launched my high school experience. This was a very big accomplishment for me because I was told by upper classmen that “No freshman ever go to States.”
This experience helped me grow as a person and led me to focus my efforts on participating in the Michigan State Championship meet in my individual events rather than just in the relay.
My love for swimming began when I was about a year old: running to the water and never wanting to get out. It’s been a passion for me ever since.
When I was 9 years old, I was watching the summer Olympics with my Dad one evening and could not take my eyes off the swimmers. I was entranced by how fast they could swim across the pool. I remember vividly that day as being the day that inspired me to work hard and focus on making the Olympic Swim Team and was also when I joineed my first swim team.
Over the years, I have participated in the Junior Olympics, the State Championships and the NASA Swim meet in Florida through learning to focus and lots of hard work.
My goal for this summer is to achieve gaining a position and participating in the Sectional meets.
Swimming has taught me many things about life: about hard work and success, team work, integrity, and leadership.
When I am not swimming I am also involved with the Praise team at my church. I am also a part of the Delta Gems organization where I am on the finance committee for our team building and community service events. I also have had a passion for crocheting since I was 10 years old. I started my crochet business, KyWen Kreation when I was 12 to assist with some of my swimming cost.
My Sophomore year I was one of four girls to swim the 200 Free Relay (1:39.37) who broke the 2008 pool record during County Swim Meet and was featrued in the Oakland Press Online Edition. The same group broke the record again (1:37.40) at the STATE Swim Meet setting a new school pool record to beat.
My Junior year the same four girls broke our own pool record set my Sophomore year (1:36.49). We also were the County and Conference Champs for the 200 Free Relay. I also received my individual state cut for the 50 Free (24.94).
