My name is Alyssa Ashworth and I have been a swimmer since 4th grade when I first fell in love with the sport. I have since grown up with the sport and have learned so much about myself through varying factors. Swimming has always challenged me in the best way possible. It has always given me a chance to compete not only against others, but also against myself. I have grown physically and mentally through the sport over the years and I am so thankful for that. One of the many things I love about swimming though is the team and the relationships made with my fellow teammates and competitors. The swim world is much different than any other sport. Competitors are seen as friendly competition there to push you to be your best. There have been so many occasions where I have gotten the chance to talk with my opponent after a race and its so nice how no matter what had happened in the race, everyone was all smiles and happy for the other person. Now for my teammates, I will forever be thankful for my bond with the teammates. They have been some of my most trusted and closest friends for so many years and it puts us in such a great position to be happy for each others successes. Swimming has always been a tough sport, yet it has always been a sort of therapy for me over the years. Something about swimming just takes my mind away from reality and it is something that I will always need in my life.
The individual nature of swimming has helped me learn to push myself academically and this has allowed to me be successful in many different ways as a person and with my education. With it being an individual sport though, it teaches a new level of competitiveness and focus. Throughout all my years swimming, being competitive is in my nature and drives me both in the pool and outside. I work hard each day to become a more efficient and stronger swimmer through traditional pool workouts and dry-land workouts. Being competitive within the sports has also helped me to be competitive outside the pool. Part of this competitiveness has allowed me to achieve things such as two National Honor Societies, High School Team Captain as a Junior, and High Honor Roll. Something that being such a committed athlete includes though, is good time management and that is something that I have learned over the years and have become very successful at. That is also why I am confident in my ability to join a swim team while also working towards a Nursing major. Swimming is definitely something I am very passionate about and would love to pursue in college.
