Personal Statement

ACADEMICS: I attended Parkside High School in Salisbury, MD through my sophomore year until the third week of April 2010, at which time I moved to Shippensburg, PA. With only six weeks remaining until the end of the school year and transitioning to mostly all Honors classes, there was an impact to my G.P.A. Please understand that I truly didn't 'slack off the last semester' but rather that I did my absolute best given the somewhat disadvantageous time frame of our move to PA. Had I completed my sophomore year at Parkside, I'm certain that my G.P.A would have remained consistent, but our move was one of those life challenges that I faced and did my best to work through. (One transcript reflects all my grades through the third marking period at Parkside for my 10th grade year and another transcript reflects the grades for the last 6 weeks at Shippensburg also for my 10th grade year.) I am a very conscientious student, always striving for academic excellence, and know that a quality education is to be held in high regard. My SAT scores do not reflect the type of student I am; I'm still disappointed with my scores. I'm uncertain if its anxiety or feeling somewhat under pressure while taking the SAT, but I was hopeful that my scores would better reflect the type of student I am. I plan to take the ACT this Fall, and am optimistic my scores will show improvement. It is my hope to gain acceptance into a college that will fit my long term career goals as well as my personal goals; being at a college where I feel comfortable and is the right niche for me, so that I am content, successful and am able to make the very best of my college experience.

SWIMMING: I have committed over nine years to competitive swimming; starting with a local aquatic club, transferring to a YMCA team when I was 10 years old and now currently participating in both club swimming and also high school swimming. My present goals are to continue making progress; focusing more on my Butterfly and IM events as well as restoring solid times in my Breaststroke events. I have a lot of internal drive, as well as a genuine commitment to do my very best each time I compete. At a very young age, I accomplished qualifying at the National level in two breaststroke events, and have added three additional individual events as well as four relay events since then. I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment three years ago (and each year since) when my MD YMCA team was able to send 4 girl's relays to Nationals as a result of my times in both the Freestyle and also Breaststroke events. Prior to my participation on the team, they didn't have four solid female swimmers to pull the relays together (For the 200 & 400 Freestyle and 200 & 400 medley relays.) Most recently, I was proud to represent Shippensburg High School at the PA District 3 Class AAA State meet, as I was the first swimmer to advance to that level from SAHS since 2004. (Unfortunately, swimming is barely on the sports radar here at SAHS!) Although swimming is a very individualized sport, I believe in always being a team player and representing your team with your best efforts and intentions. I have a genuine desire to swim in college, and am hopeful that I am able to do so. PLEASE NOTE: After changing teams from MD to PA in 2010, I took a 4 month break from swimming.  After getting back in the water over the summer months, I quickly realized I had a lot of work to do to get back in the game, as most of those swims yielded disappointing results. Since the onset of 2011, I am much stronger and feel confident that all of my races have come back together. In the Stats section of my profile, I have included just my personal best times rather than all the times I have swam the past three years. Besides my Breast event (where I've struggled a bit the past year; best most recent time was a 1.08.3 in the 100) and minimal desire to swim the longer distance events, I have matched (within 1/2 second) or surpassed all the best times I achieved in 2009. I have set high swimming expectations for myself and am certain I will achieve them as I enter my senior year; Fall 2011. ALL VIDEO COVERAGE IS FROM HIGHER LEVEL COMPETITIONS TO INCLUDE DISTRICTS, STATES & NATIONALS.
