Personal Statement

I swam at my first swim meet when I was eight years old wearing a flowered Walmart swimsuit because my Mom did not want to spend money on team suit until she knew if I was going to like it. As soon as I finished that first 25 freestyle race with a heat ribbon in my hand, I asked my Mom if I can get that team suit now, and I have been asking for race suits ever since. My best stroke is freestyle, and one of my strengths is my versatility in distances. I swim all of the freestyle events from the 50 to the mile. My versatility allows me to help my team by earning points in my individual events, and I also am an asset to a team’s relays with fast sprint splits. I am a very goal driven and competitive person. I give it my all in every set during every practice. I understand that the harder I work every day leads me closer to my goals. All of my coaches have complimented me on being a “Racer.” I am a competitive person every time that I get into the water. I am not only looking to improve my time, but I am also racing against my opponents wanting to get my hand to the wall first. My focus on goals and competitive spirit are also seen in my academics.  I am proud of my high GPA and my acceptance into my high school’s National Honor Society. I live in a small town in northern Wisconsin where during my club season I have to drive forty minutes one way for practice. Being from a small town means there are few opportunities of specialized coaching or other distance swimmers. I am excited to grow with specialized coaching and train with other distance swimmers at the collegiate level.
