Personal Statement
Hi,
My name is Sierra Ausman and I am currently a junior at Assumption Catholic Secondary school in Burlington, Ontario. I first began playing tennis when I was 5 years old and have had a passion for the sport ever since. I play about 25 hours a week including fitness and competition, but I still find time to complete my school work on time and maintain good grades. My dream after graduation is to attend a university that will further both my athletic and academic career.
Each time I step on the court, I look at it as an opportunity to improve my game and grow as a player. Especially after experiencing the affects covid had on tennis in Canada, I never take court time for granted. I have high intensity from the very first shot I hit, and I am constantly looking to apply what my coaches tell me. I am a hard worker who never gives up on a ball, and I am always engaged and looking to anticipate my opponent’s next move. During matches, I am determined to win, but if things aren’t going my way I reset my mind and focus on problem-solving. I have great communication skills and am a great team player thanks to my 5 years of competitive volleyball experience. I have also played in team tennis leagues that follow the college tennis format. I have learned how to thrive in a team competition environment supporting and encouraging my teammates while also focusing on my own game.
Despite having to work school around my busy tennis schedule, I have always maintained very high grades. I take 4 or 5 advanced placement classes each year and take on a very heavy workload. This has allowed me to learn proper time management and how to commit myself to both athletics and academics without sacrificing the quality of either. Since I have been juggling tennis and school for many years, becoming a student-athlete in university would be an easy transition for me. Overall, I believe I have what it takes both athletically and academically to become a college student-athlete and I am excited to see what comes next!
