Personal Statement
My love for running started in kindergarten where I always wanted to race against my friends. However, basketball had been my main focus until recently. My ultimate goal was to play basketball in college. In the past year, I realized that I wasn’t going to have the height needed to compete at the next level, which was a major setback for me. Therefore, I have turned my attention to track where I have discovered unfound potential. I’ve always believed that I have to work hard in order to obtain the results I want and to be able to compete with the top athletes because success is not simply handed to you. In fact, starting in eighth grade I found that I actually enjoyed physical fitness such as push-ups, crunches, planks, etc and pushing myself further than I thought I could because I believed that if I wasn’t going to be able to run in college, I wasn’t going to be happy. That’s why I was able to continuously remind myself of how much I wanted to get to the next level every time I wanted to quit, which made me push myself harder. Throughout this whole journey, track has tested my mental toughness but even more has made it stronger and made me notice that I hate giving up. Nothing upsets me more than the feeling of knowing I let myself or someone else down or knowing that I was almost there or that I could’ve done more. I know I still have a lot more to learn and that this journey has only just begun, but I’m promising myself, my coaches, and my teammates that I will never back down.
