I am a full-time track and field student athlete. Although I will throw discus and shot put, I have been focusing my efforts on throwing the 20 pound weight during the fall and winter season (indoor season) and throwing the hammer during the spring and summer (outdoor season). In Florida, all throwing events are competed outdoors. There are no indoor throwing facilities. I am lucky to live in South Florida, where I practice the hammer throw with great weather most of the year.
For the past year, I have been traveling to Atlanta, Georgia to train under Coach Mike Judge and compete with the other throwers at the Throw 1 Deep club in Marietta, GA. When not traveling to Atlanta, I travel on weekends to Orlando, Florida, where I train with former Olympian, Erin Gilreath. When not throwing the weight or the hammer, I am working on strength and Olympic weight training with my strength and conditioning coach or studying.
I am a hard worker, love to compete and am told that I am very coachable. This year, I traveled to Nashville, TN for the Music City Indoor Competition and to Pocatello, ID for the Simplot Games in order to gain some indoor competition experience before competing at the New Balance Indoor National meet at the Armory in NYC. I was pleased with my performance during the indoor season, as I placed and received a medal at the Simplot Games, and placed 5th out of 35 girls at the New Balance Indoor National meet (Emerging Elite division) in New York City.
This summer, I am looking forward to competing in the Emerging Elite division at the New Balance Outdoor National meet in Greensboro, NC on June 14, 2019. I will be attending the Throw 1 Deep summer camp in Marietta, GA at the end of June again this year. In July, I will be competing at the USATF Junior Olympics Region 4 meet in South Carolina on July 5th and am eager to compete at the National Junior Olympics in Sacramento, CA at the end of July 2019. During my travels, I plan to visit several colleges and universities to see where I would be a good fit.
I just took the June SAT exam and expect results to be posted in July. In addition to training for my summer meets, I will be prepping to increase my SAT scores when taking the SAT at the end of August. After that, I hope to concentrate on the SAT subject exams that might be required at some universities.
I am looking forward to the exciting opportunities a D1 student athlete will encounter. Currently, I am undecided as to my focus of study and major; however, I am considering taking courses in business and liberal arts and am interested in possibly attending law school after college. I want to attend a college/university with a strong throwing program, where I can be ranked among the top throwers in the country. I am willing to put in the effort and time, and I plan to be an asset to my college/university team.
Up to date videos of training and competitions are being uploaded to Instagram @gillthrows. I look forward to hearing from you.
