Personal Statement
Early on in my high school career, it was clear of what direction my life is heading. I have been captivated by the medical field - particularly the surgical world - for years now, and this passion has driven my high school studies and collegiate goals. This past summer, I completed a 60-hour apprenticeship with the cadaver labs at Idaho State University, where my love for human anatomy grew exponentially through cadaveric dissections. In college, I plan to obtain an undergraduate bachelor's degree in Biology, following a Pre-Medical pathway. My ultimate desire is to be accepted to medical school, obtain an MD, and become a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon.
I am a fully dedicated individual, both in the classroom and on the track. Running is my love, my passion, my escape, and I know just how devastating my life is without it. During the summer before my junior season of cross country, I received a spinal surgery to correct severe scoliosis. Thirteen of my lumbar and thoracic vertebrae are now fused, and my back presents an 18-inch long scar running down. Rehabilitation was by no means easy, but I worked very hard to walk and eventually run again, and by the end of that junior season, I finished seventh at the Idaho State XC Championships. Now on the other side of the operation, I am running better than I ever have before.
My collegiate aspirations combine my affinity for the medical field and my devotion to running. As I compete in cross country and track collegiately, I will continue to maintain the highest academic standards for myself and my future. Eventually, I want to heal young people like myself that were knocked down through their medical limitations and give back to them the blessing that was my spinal surgery.
