Personal Statement

My name is Ginny Westerfeld. I have been running track since the 6th grade. I graduated from Batesville High School in 2014. During high school I competed on the varsity track team my freshman through senior years. During those four years, I was named team MVP three times. I am also a four-time conference champion and a three time Sectional champion in the 100-meter dash. My junior year I was runner up at Regionals in the 100-meter dash and participated in the state finals.

At Regionals my senior year I was runner up in the 100-meter dash, third in the 200-meter dash, and third in the 4x100 meter relay. I advanced to the state finals in those three events and earned an 8th place medal in the 100-meter dash.  Later that summer after my senior year I was given the honor of representing Indiana at the Mid West Meet of Champions as an Indiana All-Star.  My senior year I also competed at the indoor state meet where I placed second in the 60-meter dash.

During the summers of my junior and senior years I participated in the Junior Olympics series. My junior year, 2013, I was very blessed to have the opportunity to advance to the National Championship in North Carolina. What an amazing experience.  Last summer, 2014, I also spent most of my time staying with my club coach, Darrell Reed in Illinois. He is one of the coaches for Track My Speed and also the head of the USATF youth program for Indiana. While a member of Track My Speed, I participated in the Youth National Championship in Bloomington, Indiana and the Junior Olympics. I have also attended a few track camps, one including a trip to Boston, Massachusetts to work with Latif Thomas and many other incredible coaches.

Last fall I was enrolled in college and I was a member of the Track and Field team.  Throughout that first semester I became sick.  It was similar to mono or chronic fatigue.  My illness was affecting me academically and athletically.  On the advice of my doctor, I withdrew from school and athletics so my body could heal.  It was a short-term solution to avoid a long-term problem.  I am now healthy again and feel better than ever; even better than I did in high school.  Starting April 2015 I resumed training.  I have been doing core, lifting, and even some sprint training.  I am excited to continue my track career.

I have a lot of passion for this sport.  My long-term goal is to make it to an Olympic trial and participate in the Olympics. My short-term goal is to try and help my collegiate team win a conference championship and build a winning team.  I know that with the right coaching and continued hard work I will achieve my goals. I am looking for a school with a very strong sprints program and also coaches that are as passionate as I am about Track and Field. I am looking for a coach who would like to develop me to my fullest potential.
