Personal Statement
Hello Prospective Coaches,
My name is Jaylene Ortiz and I am a member of the class of 2023. I am a Black Afro-Latinx all-season athlete that has participated in multiple sports. I started track as a 7th grader. I wanted to try something new, challenge myself, and to build my stamina. Previous to my 7th-grade year, I began club gymnastics competing at the Xcel Gold level, and in 2018, qualified for Regionals, and was beam champion. Upon entering high school in August 2018, I made a decision to leave club gymnastics and solely focus on high school sports. During my freshman year, I competed in Junior Varsity Cheerleading, and Varsity Gymnastics. As I enter my Sophomore year, I will continue to pursue Track and Field during the Winter and Spring season. I will also continue to pursue competitive Cheer. I am determined to continue to challenge myself to make Varsity for both Track and Cheer.
Academically, I consider myself a dedicated and focused student. I currently hold a 4.5 GPA, and am enrolled in all honors-level courses. I participate in extracurricular community service activities. I am driven by helping others in need and am currently the State of Massachusetts Ambassador for “Be Strong” and have helped as a student ambassador for Essex Tech during their new student open house.
I am excited to go on this recruitment journey and it is my hope that it opens up many opportunities. I have the passion and drive of a dedicated student-athlete and hope that I get the opportunity to run track at the college level. Being continuously challenged is what motivates me, and my goal is to continue to decrease my sprinting times, throughout this academic year.
