Personal Statement
Being ranked 1st for all of my events my freshman year of track, was an amazing feeling. Even though I was ranked 1st, slacking was unacceptable. Throughout my high school career so far, I’ve noticed a change in my athleticism and academics. I have been challenging myself in my academics by taking harder classes and college classes. Taking harder courses and succeeding in them, has earned me a spot on the National Honors Society. Being a member on the National Honors Society has put a lot of pressure on my shoulders because I have to always maintain a high GPA. I also learned that I obtain leadership skills. I’ve been a captain for the varsity basketball team for 3 years now and one of the leaders for the girls' varsity track team. By running track, I have learned that I’m very competitive and I’m willing to do anything that will help me improve my speed and form.
I realized I had a lot of love for track when I was in 7th grade. I was the fastest in my conference and I was close to running what the high school sprinters were running. I broke a couple records at the invitationals for the middle school meets.
I lost my first race towards the end of the season my freshman year, and it made me upset. It took me some time, but I had to realize that I still had a lot of improvement to do. I was in the lead during the semi-finals at regionals for the 100 meter dash, my freshman year, and I injured my left hip ten meters from the finish line. I was in a state of shock when that happened. But I kept telling myself “this is a minor setback for a major comeback”. I started training that summer with my personal trainer, Aaron Baker, and he worked to strengthen my hips.
My first time running indoor track, I made it to the M.I.T.S State Meet, and I placed seventh in the state for the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.93 seconds, as a sophomore. When the outdoor season started, I was determined to compete at state and break the school record, since I couldn’t do so the previous year because of my injury. At the regional meet my sophomore year, I injured my right hip, preventing me from running at state again. Both of the relay teams I was apart of competed at state and did an exceptional job.
Injuring my hips has made me a better and stronger person, mentally and physically. I still train with my trainer and I try my very best to lift everyday to strengthen my body.
My junior year was a success athletically and academically. I was inducted into the National Honors Society. My basketball team won districts. I went to indoor state for the 60m dash and I finished 10th with a time of 7.94. I also made it to outdoor state for the 100m dash and 4x4m relay. I finished 7th in the 100m dash with a time of 12.7, and 17th in the 4x4. I received academic all-state as well.
I plan on graduating high school and attending a suitable college or university that will provide me with the best program(s) for my major, which is something in the medical field. As a young and determined athlete, I know that I will be able to make you and the team proud and also take on a leadership role!
