Personal Statement
I have been a competitive athlete since age six. My early athletic career involved a number of sports including swimming, basketball, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, golf, and track. I continued most of those sports until eighth grade when I knew it was time to focus on my passion in high school, which was running.
I started track in third grade and ran the 50 yard dash just for fun. In fourth grade, my coach gave me the opportunity to run the 800 and my competitive nature sparked. I won the race and became one of the best distance runners for the whole school (K-8). Each year I improved.
In 6th grade I was eligible to run the mile and ended up winning the championship with a six minute flat mile, the fastest time of all the girls in the league. The following year I joined Marlton Track Club and trained more competitively with faster teammates. After the first meet I became the fastest distance runner for MTC and dropped my mile time to 5:43, earning me the school record and first place in the championship.
In my 8th grade year, I trained even harder and my mile time dropped to 5:19 and my 800 time to 2:28. I also ran cross country for the first time for Marlton and had many great accomplishments. Our team went to Kansas AAU Nationals at Rim Rock Farm where I placed 3rd individually and our team placed 2nd. Going to nationals in Kansas was a once in a lifetime experience and led me to falling in love with cross country. One of my coaches for Marlton track and XC, Mr. Lyons, was the coach for Paul VI cross country, which was one of the many reasons I chose to attend PVI. The bonds that I formed with my teammates through my grade school career and the successes that we achieved put me in a great position to start high school and made me the athlete I am today.
As I came to Paul VI as a freshman, I was excited for my high school experience and to see what I could do with my running. I trained hard over the summer with my new teammates and bonded with them at our summer running camp. When the season started, I immediately became the number one runner on Varsity and led the team to many successes. Highlights of my freshman season were placing 4th in the Shore Coaches Invitational at Holmdel Park and getting an interview, receiving 1st team all conference and 1st team all group, and getting the MVP award.
My sophomore and junior years have also been filled with many successes including 1st team all conference and group both years, 3rd team all state, the coaches award, and the chance to be a captain for the 2017 season as a junior. Over the summer, I worked with the other captain to organize team dinners and pick apparel and uniforms. Throughout the season I demonstrated my leadership abilities and helped our team to be confident and competitive.
Along with my dedication to running, I have also been excelling in school. Since freshman year, I have taken all honors and AP classes and I have a 4.6 cumulative GPA. I take school very seriously and I will be just as excited to be in a college classroom as I will be to compete on a college track.
In addition, I was selected to be a Peer Leader and I am a member of Student Council and National Honor Society. I am a member of many clubs and have also started a social awareness club. My hard work and dedication in both the classroom and on the track/course make me unique and have helped me to reach the success I have today.
I am excited to improve even more as a runner, leader, and student, and to reach my full potential. I look forward to being a significant contributor to a competitive collegiate team and to further my abilities.
