Personal Statement
My name is Zia Barr and I am a varsity jumper at Teaneck High School in Teaneck, New Jersey. I am a co-captain as well as Captain of the “Jump Squad”. I started my track and field career in my freshman year of high school and it has been a big part of my life ever since. Growing up, I dedicated my time to ballet and soccer, but during the fall of my freshman year I had an injury which took me out of soccer for good. That same year I discovered my new love for track and field during the spring season. My initial focus was on the high jump because of my height and dance ability but it later shifted during the last two weeks of the season to the triple jump. In my sophomore year I managed to balance ballet and track at the same time. During this season my jumps increased jump after jump and I later qualified for the State Meets. Junior year I made the difficult decision to stop dancing so I could focus solely on the track. I ended up breaking my school triple jump record with a 38’8” jump, being named First-Team All County in Bergen County, and qualifying for the New Balance Nationals in North Carolina. My goal for this year is to fly past my PR and keep up with my academics. Academically, I am an Honor Roll student and I like to challenge myself off the runway by taking all honors and AP classes despite my learning disabilities. In college I hope to major in Physiology, Biology, or Kinesiology while fulfilling my side interest in engineering or design and participating on a competitive track team. Personally, I am a very goofy person who's always very happy and excited for just about everything. Thanks for looking over my profile and I hope to hear from you.
