Personal Statement
My name is Hanne Cooke, I am 17 years old and currently a junior attending Mount Airy High School. On the surface, I think I am like most young ladies. I take school seriously and get a lot of joy from play sports. Being active has always been an important part of my life. Two sports in particular are important to me. I love to run track. I have run indoor and outdoor track for the past three years in high school along with a few cross country meets. Volleyball has also been an important sport to me. I have played on my high school team for three years and a winter travel team for two years. I consider myself a pretty normal kid in my town, living with my mother, father, and two brothers and have good friends. I feel very lucky to have a supportive family and friend group.
My grades have always been A’s and B’s, and I am especially proud of this because I don’t naturally excel in all subjects. Sometimes a task can seem really hard when you try to visualize the entire thing, but if you break it down into smaller goals suddenly it can become manageable. English and writing have always been a challenge for me because I’m not a very fast nor good reader, and I don’t comprehend big pieces of work very well. But I have learned through my involvement with many varsity level sports that quitting never feels as good as pushing and challenging yourself. I am not sure what major I’m interested in yet, but I plan to make my college education a well rounded and broadening one that hopefully will allow me to explore my academic interests so that wherever the future takes me I will have a solid foundation upon which to build a career.
