Personal Statement
My academic success is my foundation. Not only do I have the drive to run collegiate track, I also have a goal to put Dr. in front of my name. I work equally hard at school for my grades as I do for my athletic achievements and success.
I remember in 7th grade, trying out the hurdles 'just for fun', and I beat the middle school record having no idea how to hurdle. The Varsity coach saw my natural talent and quickly moved me up to his squad. I gained the respect of my older teammates and proved myself capable of earning that spot. Despite hitting the second to last hurdle at the State preliminary race that year, and finding myself down on the track, I picked myself up and jumped those last two hurdles. I was hurt, but I wasn't going to not finish, and my love for track was sealed. Four years later, as I train for my junior year, I remember that moment and honor how it shaped me. I was just 13 yrs old. As a four time, state qualified sprinter and hurdler, I believe my natural athletic skills, my 'work harder every day attitude', and leadership abilities would be an asset for your program. While I enjoy hurdling, I also have a huge love for relays. My coach jokes often that I run faster in a relay than I do in an open. It's the team aspect that motivates me. Handing my baton to my teammate and cheering the other 3 girls fuels my passion. My state 4x100 relay team in 2019, broke our school record and set the All time 2nd fastest time in the state. I had my best split of 11.85 (handheld, unofficial). To have that title and share it with my relay team, means the world. It was just as rewarding as my hurdling PR that same day. We also took Gold in the 4x200 as well.
Building character and being a role model helps me to try to make smart choices. I am an FCA huddle leader, student council rep, and volunteer for the Best Buddies program at school. When I graduate from high school, I hope I leave a legacy, not just of athletic success, but of great character. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine! It is my positive outlook, work ethic, and determination to be better today than I was yesterday, that makes me shine.
