Personal Statement

Hello, my name is ShaRaya Quinn. I am 17 years old and a Senior at Emerald Ridge high School in Puyallup, Washington.  I have been running track since the 7th grade yet, I started hurdling the end of my 8th grade year.  I am a multi-event athlete but my best events are the hurdles.  I am the current Washington State 4A 300mh Champion; I also placed 5th in the 100mh this year at state.  I have placed at state every year since I was a freshman. I was also named the SPSL Female Track Athlete of the Year and broke the 400m record at my high school. I also broke both the 100mh and the 300mh records at a couple of Invitational’s I attended. This year, my coach utilized me as a "rover".  I ran whatever event he needed me to.  The events I ran this year were the 100m, 200m, 400m, 100mh, 300mh, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay, 4x400 relay, and the Long Jump.  This year I also tried something new in that I competed in the USATF Junior Olympics.  I placed 1st in both the 100mh and the 400mh at both the Association and Regional events. This was the first time I had ever tried running the 400mh (and without coaching).  At Nationals I made it to the Semi-finals in the 400mh, an accomplishment I am proud of considering that was only my 5th time running that event.

I have continued to better my times in all my events each year and in the upcoming 2014 Outdoor Track and Field Season I would like to continue to get better.  My goal is to break the State Record in the 300mh.  I want to do that by running a 41.9 or better (current record is 42.12). Another aspiration I have is to possibly compete in a heptathlon this year (given my past season competing in multiple events I feel this is something I may excel at.) I will continue to condition in the off-season by playing Soccer and Wrestling (another sport I went to state in).

When setting goals, I reach for the stars.  I would like to make the 2020 Track and Field US Olympic Team. I will be 25 years old then and that is the “prime” age of a Track Olympian.  I believe by aiming high and setting goals there is nothing I can not accomplish with a lot of hard work and determination.  I am a go-getter and feel I will only continue to get better.  I look forward to finding a college team that can not only assist me in reaching my goals, but that I can also positively help out along the way.
