I began playing volleyball in the sixth grade when, during recess, a friend encouraged me to try out for a "Rec Volleyball" team. And I loved the game! My coach there firmly suggested that I join "Club Volleyball". Playing came naturally, with no second guessing, whether the ball was placed deep or short. I made the position of Libero because I'm short in height. But I'm never short on enthusiasm and encouragement to my teammates. My freshmen high school coach recognized this and trusted me as captain to pump up my teammates to work together as a unit.
Juggling six high school classes, nightly homework, daily volleyball practices or games, and an active social life wasn't easy. But I initiated persistent self discipline to manage my time. I made the honor roll and was awarded MVP by my coach. I believe she recognized my athletic ability, as well as my nature, to constantly work harder to improve my skills to be the very best Libero I could be.
Additionally, the coach believed in my persistence to continually encourage my teammates -- when a mistake was made, when we lost a point, when a referee made a poor call. "Discouragement and self doubt" can get into a player's head and bring her down. I always feel that, "It's just one point. Let's shake it off and get the next one and the one after that!"
