Writing my personal statement has helped me realize that volleyball is not just a sport, but more importantly, it has and continues to teach me valuable life lessons I’ll be able to carry with me into my college and professional career. Over the years, I have learned to balance studying and playing volleyball, while maintaining a high GPA. By learning to manage my time well, I have been able to attend practices, games and tournaments, and still have time for life beyond volleyball. This includes reading, spending time with family, volunteering and attending church, all of which help me to be grounded in who I am as a student and athlete.
Being part of the 2018 Girls’ Junior National Championships in Detroit was a highlight of my competitive volleyball career thus far. The reality of playing alongside some of the best teams in the nation showed me that hard work and commitment pays off. However, I am most proud of how I’ve been able to continue improving as a player and student year after year. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that the game of volleyball is not only physical, but also mental. Learning to shake off mistakes and performing better the next time has helped me become the more confident student-athlete that I am today. In fact, a referee once shared how he admired my ability to stay so focused in a tense game.
As I am entering my sophomore year, I am challenging myself academically by taking several advanced classes in English, Spanish and geometry. My desire is to attend a school that will recognize my passion for learning and playing volleyball. I hope that through these words, I have been able to show you that I am a dedicated, hardworking, teachable, and confident student-athlete and I look forward to playing for your team in the future!
