- 2020 Highlights
Personal Statement
Hello all! My name is Ashtyn Haslett and I am part of the 2021 class at Centauri High School.Up until the last three games of my freshman year, I was an outside hitter for my school's JV team. At the end of my freshman year, I had the opportunity to be a small part of the Varsity team; this included traveling to post-season games and participating in practices. My coaches came up to me during practice one night and explained to me that due to the lack of setters that would be on the team for the next year, they would like me to consider trying it out. They told me that out of the girls on my team, that they believed that I was the one who would work the hardest and could do the best job at completely switching roles and mindsets in time for the next season. I decided to see where setting would take me and went to several setting camps and such. I also had the privilege of working one-on-one with Adams State University's former setter. This is when I absolutely fell in love with setting. By my sophomore year, I started every game, full rotation, at the varsity level. My junior year I really came into the role of being a setter and what it meant to me. As the only setter on my team, I learned to be a play-maker, leader, role model, great asset, and teammate. I know that I have a long way to go before I reach my full potential with setting. However, my parents have instilled a hard working mindset into me ever since I was able to walk, and I believe that it can take me, and my potential team far.
At the end of high school, I will have played on two teams of club volleyball for four years. On the club teams I will have played with many different girls at several different high levels of play. I have filled the positions of setter, outside, right side, and middle as well as playing full rotation in each position. The difference in positions has only enhanced my setting ability as it has given the understanding of what other positions need from me to be successful. Club has taught me to really love the game and enjoy it. I've learned that volleyball is fun, and even more so when your team wins. I am willing to put in the work to help my team win and have as much fun as possible.
With my work ethic, competitiveness, and passion for the game, I believe that I can really impact a team for the better, in whatever role I am placed in. I put in extra time than what my coaches have asked to make myself better. I am a team player and really abide by the WE being greater than the I. I try to be as coach-able as possible and really pay attention and adjust to what my coaches want and what my team needs. Throughout my high school career I have found a successful balance of playing at the varsity level for multiple sports, being the oldest child in my family, and pushing myself in my academics and school clubs. I strive to play at the highest level of play possible, as well as choose a college where I can push and challenge myself to be a better athlete, student, and person. I am open to all possibilities and have a slight interest in majoring in something where I can help children (I am not set on this though). I am a honors student and ambitious athlete who is excited for the growth my senior year will bring, as well as the growth to come in the best school for me.
