My name is Nyla Lawrence and this is my fourth year playing volleyball. I have been playing sports since I was 2 years old. I was first introduced to volleyball by a open gym invitation by a local club.
My first year playing volleyball, I played as defensive specialist and an overall back row player. For my second and third year however, I played all around except for setter. I continued playing all around but focused more on my right side and outside hitting. I have been blessed to play at all due to my religion not allowing me to play on Saturdays. I push myself at every practice and game to make up for the times I have missed.
My biggest influence in my life are my family and church family. They have supported me through everything and encourage me to push a little harder when the times are tough. My experience of playing volleyball has helped me grow as a person and as a player. I now understand that winning is only a small incentive for playing hard. If you give up, that’s when you already lose and the battle is over. No matter what happens if I play hard and encourage others around me, it will be a good game. While volleyball is important to me, academics are also important. I aspire to receive a great education and be apart of a stable volleyball team at my future college. I want to major in mechanical engineering and am open to traveling out of state to go to college.
