Personal Statement
Hi, my name is Mallory Monahan. I am a student-athlete at The High School of St. Thomas More (Class of 2023) in Champaign, Illinois. I was a multi-sport athlete as a kid and played everything I could (soccer, basketball, swim, tennis, softball and ran track). When I was 11 I tried out for my first club volleyball team and found that volleyball just stuck with me. I love how volleyball is a competitive sport where you must work as an entire team unit for one goal. I grew as a player through the sport, moving from middle hitter to outside/right side hitter which shows that I have versatility as an athlete. I was excited to be chosen to play Varsity as a Freshman on the right side in the 2019-2020 season. As a Sophomore, I played 6 rotations as an outside hitter. I have had the opportunity to play in the elite/travel program at Illini Elite VBC, for the past 4 years. It's through these experiences that I have decided that I would like to pursue volleyball at the collegiate level. I believe that I have the skills and traits that a college program would look for. These include coachability, positive mindset, being a smart player, and the ability to move forward during the game and not stay focused on previous plays.
I am looking for a college experience where I can receive a well-rounded academic and athletic experience. I want to be in a collegiate volleyball program that allows me to reach my full potential as a student-athlete. A program that is inclusive of it's players and allows me to grow as an individual and as a member of a supportive team. At this point, I am interested in studying Nursing or Health Professions in college.
