Personal Statement
My name is Maria Mayhew and I have wanted to play collegiate volleyball since I first started playing volleyball in middle school. I am a highly competitive individual who thrives in high-pressure situations, is naturally athletic, a strong leader and one of the hardest workers in the gym.
As a lefty, I started my career at Sports Performance Volleyball (SPVB). I played for the 13’s, 14’s and 15’s age groups at SPVB and was the team captain on my 15 Elite team. Last year, I ran a 5-1 on the 16 White team and this year as a junior, I am running a 6-2 and playing all around on the 18 White team to get the most possible playing time as a setter.
In addition to club, as a setter/right side playing all around, I helped lead Neuqua Valley High School Girl’s Volleyball Team to two consecutive regional titles and the school’s first ever conference title. This season I was named all-conference and lead the team in total kills. My long-term goals include winning a NCAA championship and a collegiate conference title, but right now, I am focusing on leading my team to a championship at this year’s AAU Nationals.
Academically, I am interested in science, technology or engineering and I am currently maintaining a 3.9/4.0 GPA while enrolled in one honors and two AP classes this year, participating in JKB (a national student athletic leadership team), Start Raiders (a drug and alcohol free leadership club) and as a SALT (student athletic leadership team) representative for the class of 2018 at my school.
