Personal Statement
My name is Beau Vanderlaan and I am 16 years old from Oak Park, IL class of 2021. I am a middle hitter for 1st Alliance 17 Silver team. My club team has achieved 1st place in most tournaments such as the Winter Classic in Milwaukee, Czone Indy, MEQ qualifier in Indy, the 1st Alliance Spring Classic and the JVA Jr. Classic. We recently placed 11th at Nationals. I helped lead my high school team, Fenwick High School to regional championship in 4A division.
I have simply fallen in love with this sport and am constantly learning, growing, and developing as a player. As an athlete, my biggest strengths are my ability to quickly transition off the net, my ability to jump and reach the ball and my overall athleticism.
I am interested in a school that has a competitive volleyball program and highly competitive academically. I am an honors student with a 4.6 GPA on a 4.0 scale. I received the Principals Award at Brooks Middle School and gave the commencement address for my graduating class. I am asked to represent Fenwick High School on many initiatives and consistently asked for potential students to shadow me. Giving back to my community and kids is important to me. I currently give back to kids through best buddies, peer tutoring and assisting with kid’s volleyball camps. I was awarded by my community the 2017 Optimism Award for strong community citizenship. I am looking for a school that supports all three areas and allows me to balance athletics, academics and campus life.
