Personal Statement

Hi, I'm Madison Lihs, but everyone calls me Madi. I began playing volleyball about five years ago when some friends asked me to play with them at our local rec center. It was then that I realized volleyball was a lot of fun and something I really wanted to do well, so I asked my parents to send me to a college-sponsored volleyball camp to learn how to play. Ever since that first camp experience, I've taken every opportunity to get my hands on a volleyball, whether I'm peppering in the back yard with my two sisters, playing with friends at the rec center, or hitting the gym with my teams. As a result of my hard work and passion for the game, I was a starter on our Clarinda High School varsity team my freshman and sophomore years, and I also earned a position with Nebraksa Elite. Aside from team practices, I've learned sound fundamentals during training sessions and lessons. As a result of my hard work and love for volleyball, I've grown tremendously as a leader and as a team player. I still have a lot to learn, but I work hard and am very coachable.

Besides playing volleyball, I am involved in other activities. During the winter I swim competitively on my local swim team.  I've been very successful in the pool, setting records at the local and state level and also finishing in the top 5 at regional swim meets. I also work part-time as a lifeguard and teach private swim lessons. I enjoy running and bike riding, spending time with my family, and reading. I also play the clarinet, the bass clarinet, and the saxophone in my high school band. I was also nominated "Loess Hills Outstanding Drum Major" at the Loess Hills Field Marching Competition held on October 10, 2015. I am also very active in my church; I have been an altar server for six years, a lector during Mass, and I was just recently confirmed in my faith.

My overall goal is to continue playing for Nebraska Elite and the Clarinda Cardinals to prepare myself for college volleyball. I want to expand my abilities--mentally and physically--in order to bring my skills to their full potential.  More than anything, though, I want to continue to be a leader in the classroom so I can spend time doing what I love: playing volleyball!
