Hi, my name is Emilia Powdery and I am from Newton, Massachusetts. I am a starting setter for my Smash Volleyball club team and as well for my Varsity Newton Country Day School volleyball team. I have been playing volleyball for 6 years and it has been a big part of my life. Even though I did not start to play volleyball until I was around 11 years old I played soccer for the majority of my life. My oldest sister started playing volleyball when she began high school and I followed in her footsteps. I would go to every game I could and watch the setter for her team although she could set the ball so perfectly like butter every time she could also hit the ball so hard it could leave a dent in the floor. She was my inspiration. I always switched positions between right side and setter, which helped me with court awareness and being flexible wherever my coach needed me. Something that I have learned about myself while playing volleyball is that the leadership role on the court is something that feels natural to me. Especially being a setter you have to be a leader telling your teammates what ball they will hit, where to pass, learning and memorizing all the serve and serve receive rotations, and even giving words of encouragement to my teammates. My goals for the rest of my high school career are to continue to win the league tournament my school is in and to work hard and thrive academically. In college, I hope to compete at a strong collegiate level and continue to grow as a player and student.
