I was always an athletic kid. Growing up I played soccer, basketball, lacrosse and gymnastics. Volleyball was the first sport I was truly passionate about. I love the team aspect of the sport and thrive on the connection with my teammates and coaches. In addition to the adrenaline rush from a well played game, I also have learned to appreciate the strategy of the game. The summer before my freshman year of high school I was injured and was unable to tryout that year. This was a huge disappointment, but led me to the opportunity to stay connected with the team as manager. Managing our team allowed me to learn more about the sport I love and made me all the more excited to play the next year. I was the only sophomore to make varsity that year and even though I was nervous and excited to be the youngest player on the team, I couldn’t wait to get in there and play. On the second day of practice I experienced the same injury to the opposite knee. This was a devastating blow that I was not going to let get the best of me. I went to every practice and every game to help my coach with statistics and other responsibilities, increasing my understanding of the game even further. We had an amazing season, winning the league title, and making it to the state semifinals. Being on the sidelines again was torturous, but it taught me to be a better teammate and to persevere through challenges. I am convinced this ultimately made me be a better player. My junior year, applying all that I had learned, I earned First Team All Conference. I have proved I am capable of overcoming repeated adversity and disappointment. This skill will serve me not only in volleyball, but throughout my life.
