Personal Statement
My name is Desirae Dorr, and I am a middle blocker/hitter for the Lady Canes, but I can play any position on the front row and can fill in on the back row if needed. I've played volleyball on this team for 3 years and every year I push myself to learn more and more in order to make myself and my team better.
In all honesty, I haven't always been this driven and dedicated volleyball player. In 8th grade, I tried out for my middle school volleyball team; it was the first year that my school was offering it and I was beyond excited. However, my heart was broken when I didn't make the team. A bit discouraged, I refused to try out my freshman year and had hung up my dreams of playing college volleyball. As the season came to an end, many volleyball players encouraged me to try out for the upcoming season. After a lot of convincing, I decided to go for it. Surprisingly, I made the team and started varsity that year as a sophomore. Ever since then, I've never been afraid to try anything. The experience truly taught me to humble myself and never stop working hard. So every time I step on the court(even if it's just practice), I play my heart out and act like the coach that denied me a spot on her team, is in the stands staring in admiration.
Knowing how it feels to "not be good enough", I always encourage my teammates, on and off the court. Being a team player means helping someone when they can't get something right or praising and being excited for them when they get a good kill; I've made sure to always have this quality. Having a close bond with your teammates, makes such a positive difference on the court.
Just like in sports, I've always pushed myself academically as well. I knew that grades played a huge role in my future and I've always day-dreamed about what amazing career I would have. With that being said, having just an A in school was never enough for me, if it wasn't a 97 or above, I wasn't satisfied. With a 4.0 GPA, a 30 on my ACT, and a drive to be valedictorian I am looking for a college that will challenge me while also helping me get closer to my dream job.
