Personal Statement
Hello! My name is Morgan Stevens. I have learned so many things about myself from volleyball. I found that initially, I was very independent. I have learned how to better benefit the team and not be as introverted by helping with strategies and scouting other teams to help find opportunities to score. I’ve learned that a team that works well together is often better than the teams that are really good but have no team chemistry. I have been told by many of my coaches that they can teach the skills but they can’t teach teamwork. In addition, I have learned how to quickly adjust the mechanics of my form. Martial arts helped me to pay close attention to detail. As a result, I can accept feedback and make form adjustments quickly. Early on, I would become too hung up on mistakes or weaknesses. It used to take me a whole game to get over one big mistake. Now I realize mistakes are part of growth and the important thing is to learn from them and not repeat them. I am able to do this because I have learned how to fix my mistakes without beating myself up over them. And finally, I have learned that I absolutely love to play volleyball. I love the strategy of placement, scouting the other team and the mechanics of executing a play that creates a great hit/block. I also can read a player and as a result, I adapt to each player's strategies or habits. I know many tricky plays like slides and 31s and enjoy the strategy of the right time to call those plays.
I have many goals for my academics. I definitely want to keep up my good grades because they are important to me. I am not afraid to ask questions when I don't understand something. I want to be an animal conservationist. I love most anything that I have been taught in biology classes and I hope that I will be able to make an impact on how people and animals live together. I also enjoy a bit of chemistry. I enjoy how different chemicals can cause parts of the body to change and I love to try and figure out what chemical changed it to be the way it is. One of my hobbies is writing. I am in a creative writing club and I am in the long process of writing a novel. Writing often also helps me improve my scientific research documentations.
