It's definitely a little challenging living in New Jersey and becoming a competitive beach volleyball player, but I'm very determined! In the Jr. National Championships, I crashed into my partner and got a bleeding nose. It didn't stop me from playing - I just kept sniffing it back. I was thirsty anyway :) Many of the tournaments I've played this year have been in over 100-degree heat, and I'm grateful that heat is also something that doesn't bother me. I'm lucky to have a father who also plays competitively, so I always have someone to practice with.
My parents have sacrificed so much to help me - we drive an hour and fifteen minutes one way to practice four times a week. My dad is the assistant coach in exchange for my tuition and fees. I've promised to get them a new mini-van once I become rich and famous :) I've told them I don't need Christmas/Birthday or any other presents so that I can instead travel to North Carolina, Florida, California, etc. to play. That's the most important thing to me right now.
I had a great indoor season as a setter, and am flattered that I've been approached (through my coach) by many indoor coaches. However, my heart is in playing beach. I just didn't get to hit as much as I would have liked, so I'm working on that right now to get it back. But would I play both in college? SURE!
I was selected out of 300 beach players to train with East Coast Beach Volleyball Academy's Collegiate Development Team, and I was offered a spot on the GAV Elite Team without even trying out. I'm in all honors classes at school and I've been personally invited to the White House twice to meet the President - that's a whole other story.....
