Hi! My name is Hope Maddox and I am currently attending Wilson Memorial High School as a member of the class of 2023. I’ve always enjoyed philosophy but I found I deeper appreciation of it when I realized it was more of a personal journey than an objective understanding to achieve. You may be wondering how philosophy has anything to do with volleyball, understandably so. I may go as far to say that philosophy has much more to do with volleyball than one would think. To me, playing volleyball is not as much about being #1, but the journey to become it. After all, the apple is always sweeter when you climb the tree. I like to apply this to the foundation of my character -among other things. I am a team player as well. Yes, I understand how cliched that statement may be yet I can say it with utmost confidence. Being a part of something larger than myself teaches not only more respect for the game but a lesson in humility. I am not the strongest nor the best but I will strive to be, for what else could I do? “You can’t ever reach perfection but you can believe in asymptote out toward which I’m ceaselessly striving”. A team, in that respect is the most beneficial thing that I have. Where one may lack, I may shine and vice versa. While on my journey to improve where I may be less sufficient than other I know I have my team. But I am very aware of the difference between complacency and what I lack. Though one may make up for what I lack does not give me a cop-out to where I may throw in the towel and be happy with my performance. The day I become completely happy with my total performance, is the day I become complacent.
