Personal Statement
Hi, I’m Amyah, an upcoming senior at Kamiak High School and doing running start through Edmonds Community College. I live in the greater Seattle Washington area. I have been playing volleyball for 8 years and just finished my seventh year of club volleyball. When I was 8, I watched the NCAA Volleyball Championship in Seattle and ever since then, volleyball has been my life. I play volleyball because it gives you freedom, allowing your mind to escape everything else and just focus on the game. I love the competition, the feeling of winning as a team when you have worked so hard to build team camaraderie. When I first started volleyball, I was very young and I wasn’t sure if I picked the right sport, but with hard work and dedication I have made it to where I am today.
I am a nationally competitive athlete. During my club seasons I have competed in tournaments such as; Pacific Northwest Qualifiers, Emerald City Classic at the University of Washington, AAU Jr. Nationals in Orlando and the Summer Soiree located in Anaheim. As a freshman I was brought up to the Junior Varsity team where I became the starting libero and backup setter. As an athlete, I have a lot of positive energy and love taking that into games. I have a no quit attitude, and an aggressive defensive style that allows me to hustle and get gritty. I have an uncanny ability to motivate and lead my team no matter what the situation, while being able to stay focused on and off the court and excel in my academics.
My ideal school would be one that fits my academic and athletic dreams, as well as having a strong team dynamic. Athletically I’m looking for a program that helps to solidify my strong work ethic, helps me achieve my athletic goals, and driven by a core sense of team values. This program would help push me to my max, building off my existing fundamentals. Academically I’m looking for a strong program and environment that would support my academic goals.
I don’t believe that 2020/2021 has gone as planned for everyone, but I’m making the best of it. During Covid, I stayed active and engaged in volleyball by attending camps, personal one on ones, a training team and I have been working with a strength training coach. I know that my future college team has had to make adjustments and I’m willing to adapt to these changes too!
