Personal Statement

My name is Madison Kamalei Kauahi, but I prefer to be called Maddie.  I have been playing water polo since the 7th grade (four years).  In those four years I have played two years on the Kamehameha Intermediate team as a 7th and 8th grader and three years on the Kamehameha Varsity team as a 9th, 10th and 11th grader.  I was a starter all three years.  I received the Scholar Athlete Award as a 10th grader for the Kamehameha Varsity Girls Water Polo team. I was also named to the 2012-2013 ILH (Interscholastic League of Honolulu) Girls Water Polo All-Stars first team.  We have several key players returning to our team.  We are excited about the upcoming Spring season (Feb - Apr 2014).  I have also played with the Honolulu Water Polo Club for the past four summers and also have participated in ODP as part of the Hawaii team.  I also got invited back to the National Training & Selection Camp in May 2012.  I was part of the Hawaii ODP team that competed in the ODP Regional Championships on March 14-16, 2014.  I was selected to attend the National Team Selection Camp in May 2014 for the 12th grade & under group.

I also swam for the Kamehameha Varsity team as a 9th and 10th grader qualifying for relay teams (200 free relay, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay) and individual events (100 breast, 100 fly) at the High School State Championships.  I qualified for States again as an 11th grader competing in the 50 Free, 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay.  I came in 5th in the state in the 50 free.  Our 200 Medley Relay team came in 6th, our 200 Free Relay team came in 4th and our 400 Free Relay team also came in 4th.

School is extremely important to me.  I am on schedule to receive my Honors Diploma and I have received the Honor Certificate for the Principal's List (4.0 GPA) for the first four semesters of my high school career and I continue to push myself by taking several Honors/AP courses each semester.

I am excited about the opportunity to compete and excel in both the pool and class throughout the rest of my high school career.  I also want to continue to play water polo in college to compete at the highest level and also fulfill my potential in the classroom.  I am still figuring out what I want to do for a career, but I am considering studying psychology or a related field.

Mahalo (thank you) for your interest!

Maddie Kauahi
