Personal Statement
“A winner is a dreamer who never gives up.”
These are the wise words of the great Nelson Mandela, the iconic South African leader who inspired his nation. These words capture my essence - not only as a water polo player but as a member of society. I grew up in South Africa where having a dream to succeed requires one to be determined, dedicated, and driven. And that is who I am, a dreamer, who never gives up. I have overcome many obstacles, one being the decision between specializing in water polo or swimming, but in the end, the camaraderie and enjoyment of water polo led me to be the versatile, well-rounded water polo player I am today.
I have a dream to earn a position in a strong athletic and top academic college in the United States of America. More so, I have a dream to appear consecutively on the Dean’s List. And consequently, I have a dream to play for my college’s women’s water polo team in the National State championship final. I believe through my experiences of playing the game I am so passionate about in South Africa, my unique talents in and out of the pool, such as my swimming speed endurance, my ability to strategically read the game, my pool versatility, and my natural leadership skills, I will make an instant impact on your team.
Playing and training alongside South African Olympic players has shown me the many different aspects of the game. Over the last 7 years of playing water polo for my junior varsity team, my club, and provincial / state team, I have learned to be a better teammate, a better communicator and overall I have become a committed and disciplined athlete. Fulfilling this dream will be the catalyst for my personal growth academically, socially, and mentally. I am beyond excited to embark and learn through this next chapter in my life.
