Hi! I am Sigrun Metzger. I am a Senior at Crestview High School. I have wrestled since middle school in both scholastic and club wrestling. I have also been a grappler since I was 6 years old starting in Judo, moving on to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and finally wrestling in middle school. I took 2nd in our Southwest Washington Middle School Championships, my first year of wrestling. I was the only girl to place in the tournament. Unfortunately, I missed the second year of wrestling in MS due to COVID lockdowns. My parents decided to move to FL, and I was able to compete in wrestling for my local High School in Crestview, FL. I have wrestled with them for my entire HS career. I have decided to continue my wrestling career in college. Our family is a wrestling and BJJ family, all 7 children have competed. My brother is a WIAA State Champ in 2014, and being involved in his wrestling journey really encouraged me to wrestle.
I love wrestling because it is very challenging both for my body, but also for my mental faculties. It teaches physical and mental resilience, and I truly believe that anyone regardless of their personal challenges can benefit from wrestling at any commitment level. Through sports medicine, I can touch people’s lives with the ethics and values wrestling has taught me. I also feel I haven't hit my peak yet as a wrestler. Prior to my junior year, I was a seasonal wrestler. Spending my off season with distant family and BJJ. During my visits, I competed in BJJ competitions and practiced at the BJJ school in WA where I began at 8 years old. In my junior year, I decided to start wrestling Freestyle. I competed in my first freestyle competition at the USA Wrestling SE Regional competition, taking 4th, then the FAWA (club) FS state I took 3rd and secured a spot on Team Florida for Fargo. I really enjoyed my experience at Fargo, and decided I wanted to take it further.
This year I have been focusing more on academics and learning to balance both the rigors of wrestling with maintaining a 3.0+ GPA and a full Senior academic year.
I have had many accolades in all the grappling arts, but my fondest memories aren't of podiums and medals, but personal barriers and records shattered and team accomplishments. For instance, our girls team won the first, first place trophy for Crestview Highschool wrestling ever (including both boy’s and girl’s teams). I believe I am a good candidate because teams and family are very important to me, so wherever I am accepted and attend, the team will be my family, and I will work hard for them.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and look forward to hearing from you.
