Personal Statement

My name is Aaron Riner. I am a Junior at Buford High School in Georgia. I am a 3-year starter for a nationally competitive high school.  I started wrestling at 5-years-old. My older brother wrestled and I always looked up to him and wanted to be like him. As a youth wrestler, I was exposed to wrestling at the national level with good success. As a middle schooler, I was practicing with my brother’s high school team.

Starting at such a young age and sticking with it has certainly been no easy task. However, I don’t know where I would be without it. The responsibilities, competitiveness and lack of blaming others is what makes wrestling its own unique sport. This is what drives me and makes me want to compete at the collegiate level. It takes discipline and is really a lifestyle.

I participated in 3 sports, football, wrestling, and lacrosse, since I was 5 years old.  I did all 3 sports as a freshman in high school.  My sophomore year, I dropped football to focus on wrestling while still enjoying lacrosse. This year, I dropped lacrosse and am now fully focused on wrestling.  I am training more while hitting the gym harder to get bigger and stronger to become a better wrestler.

I will be attending several collegiate camps this summer.  My goals for my upcoming senior season are to be a state champion, place at NHSCA and gain more exposure in national tournaments by achieving All-American status. As a senior, besides winning an individual state title, a bigger goal is to be a leader and help my team win a team state title and knock off our rival, the 9-time undefeated champions in Georgia.

I am looking forward to my senior year and even more excited to find the right college for me and put my skills to the test at the collegiate level.
