Personal Statement

Hi! My name is Samuel Bowers and I am a Senior at Northside High School in Columbus, GA.  I have been wrestling since the spring of 2017, my 8th grade year.  I have wrestled on the varsity team every year at my high school. I have been to State every year and improved every year. First year just as a qualifier at 106, second year 6th at 126, and last year 3rd at 145. I also wrestle with Icon, a club here in town.  I have competed in tournaments with it as well.  I love to wrestle. I hope to add to my accomplishments this year as well.

My collegiate goal is to attend college and obtain a degree in Exercise Science or something like that in order to become an Athletic Trainer.  Academics is a must and good grades to accompany those academics is of the upmost importance. I would also like to peruse my passion as a wrestler at the college level. Who knows an NCAA All American could be in my future!

I am a good candidate for several reasons. I am a hard worker and I put in the time to better myself as well as my teammates. I have learned to persevere and push through even when I didn't think I could.  I am a team player.  It is important to not only want to better yourself but your teammates as well.  The example you set is often followed by others. Be the kind of teammate you would want someone to be for you. Often times you can learn from others as well as share with them your knowledge that will make you both better in the long run.

First and foremost, I am a Christian. I rely on my faith to get me through the hard times as well as being grateful for the blessings that are given to me each and every day. My parents taught me to finish what I start. There is no quitting!  Academics has always been a must in our house. I mean good grades, A's and B's, there was and is no just sliding by. I know that these same standards are expected of me by my parents even in college. Unacceptable grades equaled no wrestling or any other extracurricular activities until the academics were where they should be. Academics definitely came first.  Since I have started wrestling I have learned determination, perseverance, humility, humbleness and how to set goals for myself and accomplish them one goal at a time. I have learned how to deal with and push through obstacles and set backs that have come my way. I like these quotes . They say what I need to be reminded of at times when things are not going as planned and the goal seems to far away to obtain." Every setback is a setup for a comeback. God wants to bring you out better than you were before.",  C.S. Lewis said, " Hardship often prepares an ordinary person for an extraordinary Destiny.", and "Success is determined by how you handle the setback.". My parents have always encouraged and pushed me to be the best I can be even when I may have wanted to give up. I love this sport and would love to see were a college opportunity could take me.
