I have always played sports. For as long as I can remember I have been on a team and soccer was my sport. Going into high school, I was sure that I was going to continue playing soccer for both my club and my school. That is, until I found wrestling. My freshman year, Coach Barr convinced me to give wrestling a shot as a way to stay in condition for soccer. My dad wrestled in high school and he told me how much he enjoyed it so I gave it a shot. I wasn’t prepared for how hard wrestling would be but I loved it. I loved learning something new. I loved how hard it was and how hard I had to push myself. Wrestling helped me understand what it was that I loved about sports, that by working to improve myself and getting better, the team benefitted.
Since October of my freshman year, I have wrestled nonstop. I knew that in order to get better I had to dedicate myself to wrestling. After my freshman season I joined Morris Fitness to continue wrestling. I also had to make the hard decision to end my soccer career. In order to get better at wrestling I had to continue wrestling. Starting as a freshman I was already behind everyone else so I wrestled as often as I could. I entered every tournament I could in the offseason. To catch up I have been wrestling non-stop for 2 years.
In the process of growing as a wrestler I learned what it was that motivated me, the drive to learn something new and to build a team. My high school doesn’t have the biggest team so I spend the offseason talking with others about why they should wrestle.I take teammates to Morris with me so that they can get better. I talk with my coach several times a week about my own plan and creating a plan to grow the team.
I want to do whatever I can to ensure that I don’t have to stop wrestling once high school is over. I want to keep learning and getting better. I want to keep building my leadership skills and contributing to a team. After college I would like to join the armed forces in an officer program.
