Personal Statement
Academic Interests:
Engineering has always held great significance in my life. Ever since I was a toddler I was interested in designing and building things; I would often spend hours playing with Legos and creating whatever I could dream up. A lot of the enjoyment came (and still comes) from the problem solving aspect of engineering. My fascination with engineering persisted as I continued to grow, in middle school I would always eagerly await Engineering class as it was one of my favorites. Our teacher would present us with a problem, allot a list of materials we can use, then tell us to solve it. This free environment allowed me to really push myself, and the feeling of finally figuring out a solution was always a rush. Over time I began to realize that engineering was definitely a candidate for my future career. Around the middle of my eighth grade year a representative from Greater Lawrence Technical School gave a presentation at our school. I was enthralled by it, so I looked into it when I got home. I submitted an application just in case I was interested in the future. In retrospect, that was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I found out that GLTS was hosting a new engineering program sponsored by MIT, and I knew this was my opportunity. I aim to use this as a stepping stone to gather some information about engineering, and to help expand my intuition regarding problem solving. I hope to pursue engineering further in college and procure a career in some form of engineering as an adult.
Sports:
During elementary school I struggled to find a sport that I truly enjoyed, I quickly found out that any sport involving a ball and a net didn't bode well for me. I kept trying all sorts of different sports until I reached the fourth grade, which is when our town's youth service started a wrestling program. I imagined myself flying across a mat like the wrestlers in WWE do, after the first practice I quickly realized that this was far from the reality of wrestling. I enjoyed this wrestling much, much more. After effectively falling in love with the sport I decided that it was going to be where I apply myself athletically. I started competing in the fifth grade, then took a short hiatus in the sixth grade. However in the seventh grade I began to compete at tournaments again, and enjoyed it extensively. While wrestling was my main sport, I did soccer during the spring so that I could continue playing some form of sport. However I never really enjoyed soccer that much and decided I wanted to find an alternative sport. Eventually I learned that GLTS was starting a golf program, at first I was skeptical but I kept an open mind and gave it a try. I went to a golf clinic in Haverhill with a friend, and have been going back every week since.
