Personal Statement

I believe a great wrestler is more than a boy or even a man with a dream. A great wrestler has embedded within his character qualities that raise the bar for a higher caliber human being. One who has become ferocious and un-relenting in accomplishing his goals, but has also become compassionate and merciful with the insight of building others up and bringing them with you. No matter how successful you has become, life is always better with loyal friends and brothers who respect you on and off the mat. A wrestler that puts their whole heart and soul into wrestling will develop the characteristics of a leader and champion for life. In my character, you will find many qualifying attributes such as determination, courage, desire, integrity, focus, honor, respect, compassion, strength, faith and humility. Wrestling is more than a sport to me. It's a statement of who I am, my way of life, and is my constant teacher. I am a hard worker, always putting forth my best efforts to win. Even if the odds are weighing immensely against me, I will never give up. I am determined to live a life of honor. I began to wrestle in the 7th grade as a varsity wrestler. Within this first year of wrestling, ranking 5th in the end of year tournament, I became the first 7th grader for my junior high to win the South-end Championship. I also became Rookie-of-the-Year for my team. In 8th grade, I competed in off-season wrestling for my first time, which took me to the Utah State Tournament. All in all, I ended up placing 4th in State, 3rd in the South-end Tournament, and 4th in the District Championships. I was then awarded the Leadership Award from my team. In 9th grade, I went undefeated in my school season receiving the Most-Valuable-Wrestler-Award for my team was an honor. Taking 2nd in the 4A/5A State Championships and 3rd in the Super State Championships was an added bonus. In my high school career, I lettered my sophomore year, continuing on my path to become my best. My hard work paid off, and my junior year, I lettered again. Furthermore, I went undefeated in my region, took the Regional Championship, and was awarded with the region Outstanding-Wrestler-of-the-Year award for the lower weights. Continuing into the off-season, I won a lot of my tournaments, wrestling Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco-Roman. I ended up taking 2nd in the Greco-Roman State Tournament and 3rd in the Freestyle State Tournament to complete the season. I was the official team captain my 8th and 9th grade years and was a strong leader in drills, wrestling, and strength training my first two years of high school. Now senior year has come; I am looking forward to once again leading the varsity team as a captain as we embark on a great year, hoping for another personal undefeated season. As I write about my achievements in academics, you will see my the school transcripts indicate I have significantly struggled, yet these struggles also measure an incline of improvement. I have made of some mistakes. It would be easy to excuse my choices and chalk it up to family trauma, but because I choose to take ownership of the mistakes made, I have learned from my mistakes and have become a better person. I have learned to value my education. I know that the more knowledge I obtain, the smarter I become, the more freedom I have, and the stronger I am. As my grades have significantly improved, so has other aspects of my life. I even accomplished my rank as an eagle scout. I am capable of balancing my academics, family life, work, and social life. I am making choices that champion my future. I am a good student and an attentive listener. As I apply the strong work ethic learned from wrestling to every aspect of my life, I have discovered, I am one who can take a challenging subject or situation and find a way to succeed. I know that I can overcome hard things. Going into college I have three goals I would like to accomplish. First, graduate with a degree in a field of my choice. I would like to explore my interests in psychology, criminal justice, and physical therapy. Second is wrestling. This goal is one that is equally as important as my education. Wrestling is my passion. At the collegiate level I can see myself standing on top of the podium with gold around my neck as National Champion. I know I have the heart, character, and support to develop the skill to fulfill this dream. There are few things that would make me happier. The third and final goal is to have a family of my own to share my dreams. When wrestling comes to an end, I will have two things: a great career and a great family. I remind myself of these three goals every single day. I try my hardest to achieve them every single day. And at the end of every single day, I can see myself living the life I dream and becoming great.
