Personal Statement
My name is Kyle VanderLaan and I love to wrestle. I have been wrestling since 1st grade and plan to continue it during college. I am currently a Junior at West Springfield High school and have been a varsity starter since my freshman year. West Springfield is a 6A high school which is the largest school in Virginia. As a freshman, I placed 3rd at the conference tournament, received All-Conference honors, and was a regional qualifier. As a sophomore I placed 2nd in the conference tournament (lost to senior who got 3rd at state), placed 4th at the regional tournament (I compete in the largest region of Virginia, 18 schools), and was a Virginia 6A State Qualifier. As a result, I earned All-Conference (2x) and All-Region honors. This year (Junior), my goal is to win conference, and advance my placement in regions and at the state tournament. Although wrestling is mostly an individual sport I am a team player so I look out for my teammates and share my knowledge with them. I am a hard worker and am very determined and confident in my ability to wrestle at the college level.
In college, I plan on majoring in Education so I can teach at a Middle or Highschool level. I want to give back to all of my teachers that have helped me through my high school journey. I am interested in history, algebra and a variety of sciences.
