Personal Statement
Wrestling creates a healthy environment for me. I love the intensity that it brings every day and how it “builds” a person, not only physically, but mentally, too. I gained so much confidence through this sport; it really pushed me to get good grades and keep up on my work, as well as pushing my body and mind. Wrestling also introduced me to other sports, like football and track, to keep me active and prepared for the next year during the off-season. I have been on the varsity wrestling team for two consecutive and became the first sophomore captain for my school this year. Despite the pandemic, I have worked hard to continue to push my abilities and goals; I want to see how much I've improved and grown when we (hopefully) come back for a normal season next year.
I love the family dynamic of wrestling. Our team is so supportive of each other, always cheering one another on, supporting, encouraging, and pushing each other to be our best. That’s what I think of when I think of a team: family. Family is always there for you; family will cheer when you win and pick you up when you lose; family helps you when you get it wrong; family sees your potential and encourages you to always be better. My team is my family.
Finally, wrestling prepares me for the future. It may not teach math or English, but it teaches respect, pride, self-discipline, grit, determination, and the belief that I can overcome anything. These qualities are what “build” a personality. Who I was before wrestling is only a shadow of who I am now. I want to be a part of this team to continue to push myself and my teammates to our fullest potential--the best version of ourselves to offer to the world beyond academia.
But what I have to offer to a team is commitment, hard work, and energy I’m willing to wrestle up weight classes and cut as much as I possibly can if needed. I’m open to learning new things every day and practice as hard as I can with those moves.
