Personal Statement

I started wrestling as a freshman in high school and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the sport. I decided to sign up for wrestling because I was playing football that fall and the upperclassmen that did both sports had convinced me to do so. When I was a freshman I was about 5 '2 and 100 pounds, so when these juniors and seniors saw me staying on the football field all year despite getting beat up by bigger kids, they really wanted me to join wrestling and be the team’s 106. After spending the whole month of November practicing, December came around and it was time to start competing and I ended up winning the first tournament we went to. The rest of the regular season I spent wrestling mostly at 113 (despite only weighing 102 pounds on average) to fill the gap in our lineup. When the postseason came, I became a league champion for the first time at 106. The next weekend I placed 4th in the region and qualified for the state tournament. After wrestling at state as a freshman, I knew I had found my sport. I spent that spring practicing freestyle with my team, though because of COVID, we were only able to go to one tournament. I spent the rest of that offseason practicing folkstyle and going to camps and had greatly improved going into my sophomore year. At the beginning of my sophomore year I was named a team captain. That year I wrestled at 113 for most of the regular season while occasionally going back down to 106 which is where I would eventually wrestle for the postseason. I then went on to win my second league title at 106, place 3rd in the region, go back to the state tournament, and finish the year with a record of 44-8. I wrestled freestyle again that spring with a club, and unlike the year before, I got to wrestle at a bunch of freestyle tournaments including the WSWA Freestyle State Championships, where I would place 6th at 16U 120. This year I wrestled at 126, I won my third league title, placed 3rd in the region, and made it back to the state tournament. I finished the year with a record of 37-11.
