Personal Statement
I believe that through self-motivation, passion, and perseverance that I can accomplish anything I want to. I always strive to be not only the best I can be, but the best in one of my classes or on my team. I am very confident in my current ability to accomplish the goals I set for myself on and off the field, but I always look for ways to make myself better. I am not driven by people's opinions of me, but I love constructive criticism and listening to other people's ideas. Although I am confident in myself, I am also very humble. I know that I could not accomplish anything without God at my side. He is the driving force behind everything that I do, and I try to show people that I am different because of His love not through my talk, but through my actions. My confidence comes from knowing that I always have him pushing and helping me through both the good and bad times. I am compassionate and willing to help other people with their problems. I may not be the best player on your team at first, but I believe that I will be soon after. Some people wonder why I put in so much work or why I love baseball so much, and I tell them that the better I am, the more I am going to enjoy playing baseball. I know that I may sound cocky, but I have experienced first-hand what hard work and listening to my coaches can do. I know that you know more than I do about baseball, and I will be willing and anxious to hear what you have to say about what I can do to improve. I have talked a lot about me, the individual, but I believe that the team as a whole is ultimately more important. My goal in college is to use my resources (you, the coach, and my teammates) to become the best player I can be, but also to learn how to be most valuable to my team.
My goal academically in college is to learn as much as I can about the subjects I love. Math, science, and history are my three favorite subjects. I have always loved math and been good at it, but within the last few years I have realized how much I love science and how important history is. Quantum mechanics and the universe have grabbed my undivided attention when it comes to choosing a major in college. Thinking outside the box and coming up with new ideas is what inspires me the most. History has also recently come up in my interests. Looking at the past and finding ways to do better than the people before me just seems logical to me. I am currently reading a futuristic series by Issac Asimov about psychohistory. Psychohistory combines history, sociology, and mathematical statistics to help predict the future of huge masses of people. Although it is a fictional branch of history and science, the way he explains it and the uses it has makes me think even more about how the past can affect the future.
Sports is a huge part of my life, but I can't play them forever. The affect on future generations by my playing baseball is small. I play because I love it and it is a way to glorify God. The biggest reason I am going to college is for academics. My goal is to eventually play professional baseball, but I will still have half my life afterwards. A best case scenario is to be a star in the MLB, make millions of dollars, and never have to work again, but I want more from life than that. I want to have a bigger affect on the people around me and the people that come after me. I want to make huge discoveries in science and math that will change the lives of everyone forever. I want people to know that I accomplished great things, but more importantly that I was humble and caring while doing it. I want people to know that my life was dedicated to making other people's lives better. I want people to know that in everything that I did, that I did it all in the name of Jesus - that I lived for him and for other people to learn about him. I hope that with my future platform I will be able to tell millions of people about what God has done in my life and how it can change theirs too. I don't want people to know what I did, but what God did through me.
