From the first time I stepped onto a baseball field, I have been made to feel that I don’t belong. I have had to prove myself year in and year out, every appearance, every at bat, every pitch. As each year passes, there are more and more people telling me to switch to softball. When I reached high school, I needed to check to make sure that I would be allowed to try out for our baseball team. Why? Because I’m a girl. I see myself as a baseball player, not “the girl that plays baseball". This is where I reached the point that it became more about my gender than my level of play. If I make an error or strike out, it is because I’m a girl, an inferior baseball player to my opponent, whereas if a guy makes the same error or goes 0 for 4, it is because he is having a bad day. Everybody has their own problems and how they deal with them. Some will fold under the pressure, and some will rise to the challenge. This has taught me to be mentally tough, and to overcome others' perceptions of me. I work as hard as I can to get better to prove these people wrong. I want to break down this idea that women cannot stand on even ground when it comes to sports. I want to break through all the barriers that lie ahead, and will face my problems head on. I want to prove that I can compete at the collegiate level. Times are changing, women are proving that they deserve the opportunity whether it be in the front office, the dugout, or on the field. So will you change with them? I'll prove that I am worth taking a chance on.
Thank you,
Danielle Moser
